Most factions fan be categorized as nations or corporations. Nations are similar to nations as we know them, though they typically cover whole planets,
and it is not unheard of for a nation to cover multiple planets, space stations, moons, and so on.
Corporations are massive businesses, typically owned by a number of shareholders. The corporations here are incredibly large.
In fact, it could be argued that they are no longer businesses so much as they are nations - they behave as such, and are considered serious
players in the political front, especially the larger ones.
There is more to the world than mere politics. Here are books that cover biology, art, history, and so on without being specific to any one faction.
